THE TOWN
HISTORY SINCE 1573
The town of
Lagos, situated to the Far European West and
surrounded by 14 beaches, is one of the very few
towns that has access to the beaches by foot. Urban
head of the sacred region of Sagres, Lagos was
deeply marked by the Mediterranean.
Its
links to the sea were strengthened by the islamic
domain in the Peninsula. Geographer Edrisi speaks of
the port of "Vila de Azauia" (probably in the
present area of the town).
The time of the
discoveries and its conquests actually started off
in Lagos - the official residence of Infante D.
Henrique. It was from here that the ships started
out on the discovery of other nations.
Without closing its old ties it turned its
inhabitants to the Atlantic Islands, Africa, The
East and to the Continent of America. |
